On Thursday, April 30th, Colin Henderson took his own life. He had battled depression for several years and had recently taken a turn for the worse after losing his job and not being able to find his way in life. He entered an out patient treatment program at Peachford Hospital in mid-April and was under the care of a psychiatrist. Colin's parents were here to help out during the weeks before his death too. The last day of his life, he appeared to be stabilizing. The last night he spent time with Rory and I playing blocks in the living room and we all went to my tennis match with Nora and then out for ice cream. We were supposed to leave for Williamsburg for the weekend that day.
One small positive of Colin's death was that we were able to donate his organs and he gave five people the gift of life that they otherwise may not have had. His funeral service was at Holy Innocents Episcopal Church, officiated by Alison Schultz with a homily by John Porter. It was a beautiful service, especially the music. Nathan McMillen, Colin's best friend and band-mate, sang "The Rain Kings" at the reception and Sound Investment, Colin's a cappella group, sang "Shower the People". Colin's ashes were interred in the Memorial Garden at Holy Innocents. Rory was a very good girl during the service.
